The stories add up to an excellent running record of the development of detective forces both here and abroad. Each deals with one man. In addition to describing his career, the history and the growth of technology in police work is revealed. The cases used to illustrate major advances in detection are well retold here and the emphasis in on method. The illustrations in black and white by Edward Pagram are nothing short of horrible. The cartoonist approach is employed by the artist, while nothing in the tone of the text suggests that the author needed or wanted heavy lined, heavy handed humor.
