Here is a manuscript, which can be without any overstatement, characterized as a Burgunder treasure of book illumination. The Hours of Maria von Burgund, created around 1477 for the ancestral heiress of the empires and later wife of Kaiser Maximilian I., contains all the elements that make a book practically and ideally valuable and all become abundantly evident in this work. Throughout the 380 pages one cannot find a singular example where some aspect of book art has been neglected.
In the large and smaller formated miniatures, the historical initials, overflowing vegetation with different animals and mythical creatures, animated cartouche and moreover in large part with regard to the symbollicaly interpreted shenanigans, the painter achieves in unfolding a fantasy which appears to be almost inexhaustible.
A masterful document of noble culture during the passing of the Middle Ages, the Book of Hours of Maria von Burgund will enrich the library of every collector.
