The most hilarious and intimate questions, the wittiest and wisest answers from the world's most famous advice column
ABIGAL VAN BUREN is a well-known American journalist, whose column, 'Dear Abby', is featured in 200 newspapers all over the United States and Canada. She receives an average of some 7500 letters a week and, with the help of six secretaries, she answers every one of them. Her replies are short, tart and wisecracking when the writes seems to be asking for it, sensible and helpful when the trouble is genuine and serious--although few of the serious ones have been included in this book. All her advice reveals her extraordinary talent as a wise and witty commentator of life, love and the pursuit of zany happiness.
Abby's real name is Pauline Phillips. She is married, with two children, who help to make her chief occupation--that of housewife--a full-time job.
Extracts:
Dear Abby: My father came home and caught me in one of his new white shirts playing ping-pong and he turned me over on his knee and spanked me good and hard with a ping-pong paddle. I didn't know it was one of his best shirts. I am 15 years old. Do you think this was right?
Still Smarting
Dear Smarting: Get 'smart' all over and leave your father's white shirts alone. You were lucky you weren't playing baseball.
Dear Abby: Our daughter-in-law was married in January. Five months later she had a nine-pound baby girl. She said the baby was premature. Tell me, can a baby this big be that early?
Wondering
Dear Wondering: The baby was on time. The wedding was late. Forget it.
Dear Abby: My boyfriend is going to be 20 years old next month. I'd like to give him something nice for his birthday. What do you think he'd like?
Carole
Dear Carole: Never mind what he'd like. Give him a tie.
Dear Abby: I'm a woman of 52 and met this nice-looking stockbroker about six months ago. I told him my right age and he told me he was 61. Then he invited me to dinner to celebrate his 60th birthday. He must have a bad memory because now he says he's only 58! I like him but wonder how reliable a man can be who keeps lying about his age. What should I do?
Kate
Dear Kate: When he gets down to 55--SELL!
