This is the fourth, revised edition o what has proved to be a most popular book. It is the continuation of a similar work on the nineteenth centure. Zsuzsa D. Feher, who wrote the introduction, deals with the first half of the centure with a thoroughness that makes this work suitable for the specialist, but nevertheless in a way which allows it to be enjoyed by the general public. She analyses the different styles of the period, linking them up with political and economic trends and events. Various styles current in other countries naturally had an effect on the works of Hungarian painters. The influence is described and analyses in detail as are the hard conditions in which painters worked during a troubled political and economic period. The illustrations were newly chosen for this edition by Gabor O. Pogany, the Directon of the Hungarian National Gallery. The works, with a few exceptions, are the proerty of the Hungarian National Gellery.
